Next Mitsubishi Lancer Evo to Have Hybrid Tech

It has been confirmed that the next Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will feature a hybrid powertrain. Although such a powertrain might seem out of place in a car like the Evo, it’s just the times that are speaking — with tougher emissions and fuel-economy standards, hybrid tech is one of a few directions Mitsubishi can take. And with advancements in technology, a hybrid powertrain is one of the more affordable and feasible alternatives available to the Japanese automaker.

Mitsubishi’s president Osamu Masuko was the one that confirmed the news to Autocar, stating “We will start work on the project next year, and it will be ready within three. I have set the goal of developing a sporting car featuring electric power.”

Although no details were provided about the upcoming EVO hybrid system, it is rumored to have a diesel-electric setup. The EVO will also get a revised version of the S-AWC all-wheel-drive system used in the current Evo.
