A production Alfa Romeo 4C sports coupe is finally set to go on sale. Talking to the folks at Top Gear, Mauro Pierallini, head of engineering for Fiat in Europe, said European and U.S. sales will begin in 2013 and that prices will start under £45,000 (about $58,718 US at current exchange rate).
Critics foam at mouth at the mention of the 4C, and for good reason. With a curb-weight that is expected to be under 2,000 lbs, a rear-wheel setup and an engine that is expected to produce 230 horsepower, the Italian sports coupe is bound to be athletic. Everything about the car is light, including the engine, which uses an aluminium-block direct-injection turbo. With its twin-clutch and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, the Alfa Romeo 4C is expected to achieve a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in around 4.5 seconds. Sources say a 300-HP engine will eventually be offered.
A starting price under £45,000 is compelling. The Alfa Romeo 4C is gunning for the Porsche Cayman and will be both smaller and lighter. It will herald the return of Italian brand to North America.
