According to Peter Nefischer, head of engine development for BMW, the new BMW 3 Series might get a three-cylinder engine in the next few years. Nefischer told What Car? that the German automaker is currently working on developing smaller engines to be used across its vehicle lineup.
Nefischer believes that engine technology has gone as far as possible with the current standard internal combustion engines, and that the next step is smaller, more powerful units. The planned three-cylinder units will likely be different from the one found in the BMW i8 hybrid and will utilize turbochargers to provide the necessary power for a car as large as the 3 Series.
A three-cylinder 3 Series is expected to go on sale in two years.
