U.S. fuel-economy numbers for the new Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S sports cars have surfaced on the EPA’s website. Despite sporting rather small engines, the BRZ and FR-S fall into the middle ranks as far as fuel-efficiency goes.
With an estimated EPA fuel-economy figure of 22 miles per gallon city and 30 mpg highway using premium fuel, the manual-equipped models are about as fuel-efficient as the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 4 cyl, 2.0 L, Manual 6-spd model (21/30 city/highway on premium gas); and the Ford Mustang 6 cyl, 3.7 L, Manual 6-spd model (19/31 on regular gas).
Equipped with the automatic transmission, the Subaru and Scion deliver better figures — EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway — but likely at the expense of more driver enjoyment.
