The render of a Jaguar SUV by WCF member MOMOYAK got us thinking about why Jaguar has been so quite about adding an SUV to its lineup. There is an SUV-craze brewing, after all. As it turns out, the British automaker hasn’t exactly been sleeping and has been working on a vehicle of such manner, except it’s a crossover (CUV) rather than a conventional SUV.
Why a crossover but not an SUV? Well, according to Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Design Director, big off-roaders will be left to Jaguar’s sister brand Land Rover, which “produces the best SUVs in the world.”
Callum, the man behind Jaguar’s successful new design direction, will likely be the mastermind of the crossover’s overall design. The vehicle is expected to get an all-aluminum body to minimize weight, a compact all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed transmission. Gasoline, diesel and hybrid powertrains will likely be offered to accommodate the diverging needs of global buyers.
Although a final date hasn’t been set, Jaguar’s first crossover is expected to go on sale in 2015. That’s one long wait…
