Volkswagen Up! is 2012 World Car of the Year

2013 Volkswagen Up!

The new Volkswagen Up! subcompact took home the World Car of the Year award at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The jury, consisting of 66 top journalists from 25 countries, tested 34 models, including the all-new BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911. When the dust settled, Volkswagen‘s little hatchback was the last car standing.

“This award shows once again that in the up! our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,” remarks Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chariman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.

The Up! may have taken home the top award, but it didn’t win them all. The new Porsche 911 was named World Performance Car of the Year, besting supercars like the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and McLaren MP4-12C; the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency took home the World Green Car of the Year award, beating the likes of the Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid; and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque was designated World Car Design of the Year.

We think these are some pretty good selections. Let us know what you think.
