McLaren Automotive has revealed the latest addition to the MP4-12C lineup: the new McLaren 12C Spider. The ultra-premium performance convertible features a unique Retractable Hard Top (RHT) that is operable at speeds up to 19 mph (30 km/h). To keep performance intact, it maintains the same carbon MonoCell body structure and powertrain as the MP4-12C coupe.
The MP4-12C Spider comes with the same engine as the 2013 model-year coupe, utilizing a 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine to make 616-hp (625 PS) at 7,500 rpm and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm. Mated to the same 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission with rocker-mounted shift paddles, the powertrain allows for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint of just 3.1 seconds, which is the same as the coupe. However, it is 0.2 seconds slower to 124 mph (200km/h) and in completing the quarter mile (10.8 seconds). A top speed of 204 mph (329 km/h) is also a tad bit slower than the coupe’s 207 mph (333 km/h).
Deliveries of the McLaren MP4-12C Spider begin in November 2012. UK prices start at £195,500, which is £19,500 more than the latest MP4-12C coupe.
