New Mazda6 Coupe Under Consideration?

2014 Mazda6

The recently revealed all-new 2014 Mazda6 is one attractive piece of hardware. Traditionally offered as a sedan, wagon (estate) and notchback, depending on the market, the model may — for the first time ever — receive a coupe variant.

AutoCar is reporting that a Mazda6 Coupe is under consideration and, if green-lighted, could go on sale as early as 2014.

“There is no decision, but I would love to make one,” said chief designer Akira Tamatani. “The first job is to make the saloon and estate, but from this position a coupe is not so far away.”

The new Mazda6 may also receive the lineup’s first-ever all-wheel-drive system.

“There are no set plans, but we are studying the possibility of introducing all-wheel drive – it would be a good weapon with which to establish the brand,” said program manager Hiroshi Kajiyama. “It is my belief that there is a very strong opportunity for us if we bring it to market.”

Looking closely at the sedan, it does have bit of a coupe-like profile, doesn’t it? A Mazda6 Coupe was probably on the drawing board from the get-go.
