According to data released by both companies, Toyota has now surpassed GM in global automobile sales, selling more cars and trucks than GM in 2008. Given the strong growth of Toyota over the past decade and the decline of GM over the same period, no one should be surprised. This was going to happen sooner than later, and now it has.
GM sold 8.35 million vehicles in 2008, which is about 616,000 units less than Toyota`s sales of 8.97 million. To put things into perspective, GM had been the global sales leader for 77 years. Now that the company has slipped off its 77 year-old pedestal,it should now realize with even more clarity that it has a lot of work to do.
