Here it is — the all-new C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06! This American is tasked with stinging the European exotics in the heart, having transformed from a mere sports car into a world class supercar.
Looking every bit as menacing as we thought it would, the new Z06 features an aggressive body kit designed for aerodynamic downforce. Highlights include a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent, and the rear spoiler from the Corvette Stingray’s Z51 Performance Package.
In addition to the standard package, the Z06 is available with two additional kits developed for even better aerodynamic performance. There is a carbon-fiber aero package that consists of a front splitter with aviation-style winglets, a larger rear spoiler and rocker panels — all made from carbon fiber, of course. And then there is the Z07 package, which delivers the most aerodynamic downforce of any production car ever made by GM. It adds bigger winglets, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup Tires, see-through center section on the rear spoiler and carbon ceramic-matrix brakes.
Inside, the Corvette Z06 is distinguished by unique color schemes that emphasize the driver-focused cockpit. There is a flat-bottomed steering wheel; two seating choices, one for comfort an the other for performance; a center console-mounted grab bar for the passenger; and high-quality, soft-touch materials throughout.
Now for the part you have been waiting for — at the heart of this beast is a 6.2L supercharged V8 engine that produces an estimated 625 horsepower and 635 lb-ft (861 Nm) of torque. The engine can be paired with either a 7-speed manual gearbox or a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission, the latter featuring four gearsets and five clutches.
Special attention was paid to the lightweight, spin-cast aluminum wheels (19 inches in front and 20 inches at the rear). Because they wear wider, performance-enhancing tires than on the Corvette Stingray, the fenders of the Z06 have been extended by 2.2 inches (56mm) at the front and 3.15 inches (80mm) at the rear, offering the car a wider, lower appearance.
To balance performance and efficiency, the V8 takes advantage of Direct injection, Active Fuel Management, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing. Combined with the fuel-efficient multi-speed transmissions, aerodynamic design and lightweight construction, these features help make the new Z06 surprisingly fuel efficient.
