With the second quarter of 2009 now over, General Motors released its operational results today. It sold 1.94 million vehicles globally, down 15% over the same period last year. But it’s not all bad news for the General – sales were up almost 20% compared to the first quarter of 2009. Sales outside the United States were up 72%.

Overall GM sold a total of 3.55 million vehicles during the first-half of 2009, down 22 percent when compared to the same period last year. Poor sales in North American is mostly to be blamed for the decline. The struggling automaker is hoping that a recovering global economy and stronger product offerings would turn the tides.

“We believe the strength of our products, including the Chevrolet Camaro, Spark and Malibu; award-winning Opel/Vauxhall Insignia; Wuling Sunshine Minivan and others around the world enabled us to weather an historically difficult rebirth of the new General Motors,” said Jonathan Browning, vice president, global sales, service and marketing. “We are moving quickly to respond to new market opportunities around the globe and meeting customer needs with fuel-efficient products that offer advanced technology, compelling designs and great value.”
