There have been no news on the Cadillac Converj for while, mainly because there were strong opposition against this plug-in luxury vehicle – both from inside GM and from the U.S. government – because of its high cost. Some of these opponents have long-left GM. Ever since GM emerged from bankruptcy, there has been a renewed interest in the Converj, mainly thanks to Bob Lutz.
Although the Converj has not been approved for production, Lutz, now GM’s new marketing chief, is reportedly trying to find a way (funding, that is) to get the car into production. He thinks the Converj could potentially act as a technology halo vehicle for Cadillac. If Lutz does succeed, we won’t see the Converj until 2014.
The Converj Concept is powered by GM’s next-generation Voltec system, which is shared with the Chevy Volt. The system is made up of 16kWh, a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric-drive unit and a 4-cylinder engine. This setup will enable the Converj to produce a total of 161hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.
