Silicon Valley-based startup Lucid Motors has unveiled its new Air electric sedan in concept guise in what is a clear respnose to the Tesla Model S.
In addition to being stunning to look at, the Air is quite a piece of tech. It is powered by two electric motors — one at the front and the other at the rear — that produce over 1,000 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in only 2.5 seconds, matching the Tesla Model S P100D’s ‘Ludecrous’ mode time.

The Lucid Air can be equipped with either a 100 kWh or 130 kWh battery pack, the latter providing a range of up to 400 miles on a single charge — better than any electric car currently on the market, let alone the Model S.
Although the Air has yet to be revealed in production-guise, the concept car and the prototype revealed to the press feature a stunning exterior with a futuristic and glamorous interior that will surely turn heads. Some design highlights include a long, streamlined profile, stumpy hood, sleek LED headlights, and vertical daytime running lights.
The windshield stretches over the driver’s head, not unlike seen on the Tesla Model X, and is nicely complimented by a massive panoramic glass roof. Both give true meaning to the name “Air”.
At the rear, we see a short decklid and an extended roof line that increases interior space.
Inside, the Air is the very definition of opulent. A minimalist dashboard is dominated by two screens and a large square display at the base of the center console that seems to be used mainly for navigation purposes. Rear passgengers are surrounded by glass and are treated to reclined rear seats covered in white leather, as well as a number of interactive displays for infotainment duties.
Like the Tesla Model S, the Lucid Air won’t come cheap, with the first examples expected to carry a price tag of around $160,000. However, a more affordable model costing around $65,000 will join the lineup later on.
Production begins in 2018 in the U.S. state of Arizona.
