The latest VW Beetle isn’t the sales success that it’s maker had hoped, but there is still some life reaming in the iconic nameplate. Volkswagen is reportedly considering an all-electric Beetle.
During the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, company design head Klaus Bischoff revealed to the guys at VW Vortex that the current Beetle is one of his favorite designs and that an electric version is being considered. He specifically stated:
“We are fighting hard [for it] and considering a new electric bug. Let’s see what we can do on that one.”
VW has yet to make a decision on the electric Beetle, but the model could be based on the Volkswagen Group’s new MEB electric platform, which was used for the I.D. Buzz concept that likely previews a reincarnated Microbus.
Just imagine both the Microbus and next Beetle being offered as electric vehicles…
An electric Beetle may or may not see the light of day, but Bischoff did confirm that the current Beetle will stick around, at least for the foreseeable future.
