The Dodge Durango has finally received the SRT treatment, and it is wonderful.
Billed as the most powerful three-row SUV ever, the 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is powered by a 392-cubic-inch Hemi V8 engine that produces 475-horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in an insane 4.4 seconds — nearly on par with a BMW M5 — and complete the quarter-mile run in just 12.9 seconds.
An eight-speed automatic transmission specially calibrated for the high-octane, full-size SUV divides that power between all four wheels via a performance-tuned all-wheel drive system. It is complimented by a firmer suspension than on the regular Durango, huge Brembo brakes, Pirelli Scorpion tires, and a new exhaust system.
The driver will be able to choose between a seven-mode to precisely adjust drive settings to maximize performance or comfort. The performance-oriented ‘Track Mode’, for instance, sends up to 70 percent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels and drastically reduces shift times.
Visually, the SRT treatment gives the Durango a model-specific hood with functional center air-inlet ducts and heat extractors; a more menacing front fascia with a new bumper design, a mesh grille, a wide air dam and LED daytime running lights; fender flares; and a rear air diffuser that incorporates four-inch dual exhaust tips finished in Nickel Chrome.
There interior is covered in Laguna leather and real carbon fiber trim, a first for any Dodge vehicle. It also boasts a hand-wrapped instrument panel with live silver accent stitch, SRT flat-bottom steering wheel with SRT paddle shifters, heated and ventilated front and heated second-row captain’s chairs with embossed SRT logos.
The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT made its world debut at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show and goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2017. Is it the three-row SUV you’ve been waiting for? Let us know in the comments below.
