First Look: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox Sees a Stylist and Comes Out Looking Fresh

The last generation Equinox, while unique in its shape, appeared cold and void, both on the outside and on the inside. Compared to this soulless vessel, the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox brings a little more flare to Chevrolet’s line-up.

Exterior
At first glance, it should be obvious that Chevrolet’s new styling theme, first applied to the latest generation Chevrolet Malibu, makes its way to the Equinox. Much like the Malibu, the Equinox gets the Chevrolet brand’s new face. The shape of the car is much like it’s sister vehicle, the latest generation Saturn Vue. Like the Vue (and unlike the last generation Equinox), the Equinox is more curvaceous all around. The rear side profile looks like it’s borrowed from the Mercedes ML500, however. Nevertheless, all of these design cues create a shell that is more appealing to the eye than not only the last generation Equinox, but also much of its direct competitors, such as the latest Honda CRV.

Interior
On the inside, the Equinox takes many of its design cues from the Malibu, with the most obvious similarity being the two-tone (coloured)dashboard. The materials look rich and handsome in appearance and high in quality. Ambient lighting is also present in some key areas of the interior such as in the cup-holders, adding touch of warmth. According to the press release, the Equinox will be blessed with a high set of new gadgets, adding to what is already a very attractive car.

Engine and Transmission
The Equinox will come with two engine variations. Both utilize GM’s latest direct injection technology that optimizes fuel efficiency. The base engine is a 2.4 liter inline four putting out 185 HP and achieving fuel efficiency numbers of 21 city and 30 mpg highway. There is an optional 3.0 liter V6 that puts out 255 HP. It gets a slightly lower efficiency rating of 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Both engine variations are geared to separate standard six speed transmissions. Front wheel drive is standard and all wheel drive is optional.

The 2010 Chevy Equinox appears to be a welcome addition to GM’s attempts to rejuvenate the Chevrolet brand. It looks good on the outside, good on the inside and good under the hood. All we need now is a test drive to verify just how good it is. The Equinox will be available in mid to late 2009 and will compete against the likes of the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV 4 and Ford Escape.
