1. SEG Direct Microfiber Leather Steering Wheel Cover

When you want an affordable steering wheel cover that does nearly everything right, the SEG Direct Microfiber Leather Steering Wheel Cover should be on the top of your list. This cover looks and performs more expensive than some premium products.

Its outer layer is made from a soft microfiber leather that offers a firm and comfortable grip, while the inner layer is made of a sturdy rubber material that strongly holds onto the steering wheel to prevent slippage. All materials are eco-friendly and non-toxic.

The synthetic leather has great absorption qualities, so your hands won’t slip off the steering wheel if they get sweaty. It’s also breathable, moderately heat- and cold-resistant, and completely odorless.

There are eight different colors to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that compliments your car’s upholstery. And a universal fit with three size variations makes it suitable for most medium-sized steering wheels.

SEG Direct has crafted a great-looking, well-designed steering wheel cover that’s suitable for long drives; however, it’s not perfect. It’s not particularly easy-to-install and synthetic leather is not as durable and long-lasting as genuine leather.

Things We Like

  • Made of durable, eco-friendly materials
  • Very comfortable, odor-free
  • Fit most vehicles on the road, skid-proof
  • Weather-resistant
  • Stylish unisex design

As a heavy-duty cover, it has solid weather resistance properties that allow it to remain cool in hot weather and warm on cooler days. A skid-proof, eco-friendly natural rubber inner lining effectively grips onto your steering so that there is no slippage.

A universal fit lets it accommodate steering wheels measuring 14.5 to 16 inches (37-41 cm) in diameter, meaning most vehicles on the road are “covered” (pun intended). You also have a selection of seven attractive styles.

A downside is that the cover comes folded, and it’s difficult, if not impossible, to make the creases go away. Also, the fabric is heavy-duty and may be uncomfortable for individuals with smaller hands.

While being made of quality leather makes it more expensive than synthetic leather covers, it’s noticeably more affordable than other genuine leather covers.

Steering Wheel Cover Buying Guide

Best Leather Steering Wheel Cover

We put together this expertly researched buying guide to help you narrow down your choices when looking for the best steering wheel cover for your car.

It’s worth mentioning that, as useful as steering covers are, they are just one of many great accessories that can make your car ownership experience more enjoyable. Consider also using a quality car cover and car sun shades as they are effective at protecting you and your car from the elements.

What Is A Steering Wheel Cover?

A steering wheel cover is an automotive accessory designed to cover a vehicle’s steering wheel, with the intended goal of enhancing its appearance, providing a more comfortable grip, and protecting it against deterioration.

These covers can be made from a wide range of materials, from real leather to cloth, and come in many different styles and colors. They are generally affordable and can greatly enhance your car ownership experience.

Benefits Of Steering Wheel Covers

Steering wheel covers are not a purely aesthetic accessory like many people take them to be. They offer a handful of functional benefits that can make driving your car a more pleasant experience.

Here are five reasons why you should buy a steering wheel cover:

1. Improved Grip

Palm sweat, heat, and moisture usually cause steering wheels to become slippery after extended use, adversely impacting your grip and increasing the risk of a collision. The best-rated steering wheel covers are embossed to provide improved grip on your wheel, allowing you to more effectively steer your car.

2. More Comfort

Steering wheels commonly give people blisters. Also, they can be a literal pain to hold after being exposed to the sun’s heat all day and equally unbearable when chilled to the core after some time in the cold.

Many steering wheel covers have a layer of soft foam that cushions your hand and insulates against heat and cold, reducing stiffness, cramping, and fatigue during extended time behind the wheel. They can make holding your steering blister- and pain-free, be it on a hot summer afternoon or cold winter morning.

3. Better Fit

Steering wheels come in different sizes and shapes. If you feel that your current steering wheel is a bit too skinny, a steering wheel cover can add more girth to it, making it more comfortable and secure to hold.

4. Protect Steering Wheel

Years of sun exposure, palm grime, and regular wear and tear can cause the material of your steering wheel to dry out, crack, and deteriorate. In addition to doing your part to properly care for this important piece of your car, the best steering wheel covers will protect it from further deterioration.

5. Better-Looking Interior

A damaged steering wheel can make your vehicle’s interior less attractive. Not only will the right cover hide the damage, but it can also complement your upholstery and other car accessories you might have to give the interior a fresh new look.

Types Of Steering Wheel Covers

Knowing the different types of steering covers available on the market is necessary if you want to choose the best one for your car. The distinguishing factor between the different types is the material used to make them, which determines everything from their comfort level to price.

Leather Covers

Leather steering wheel covers are a classic choice. They are durable, breathable, more resistant to weather changes than some of the other types, and often easy to grip. Some models are soft to the touch, while others are tougher.

Unfortunately, leather covers are expensive, with some high-end models costing two to three times more than cloth and rubber covers. Their color selection is also more limited.

Faux Leather Covers

Typically made from PU leather and microfiber leather, synthetic or faux leather covers mimic the look and feel of real leather covers without costing nearly as much. They are available in many different colors.

Synthetic covers are a great option for adding more elegance to your interior, but they don’t last as long as real leather.

Cloth Covers

Cloth and plush steering wheel covers, especially the plush fleece and fluffy varieties, are usually very soft to the touch and are ideal for those who like to keep their steering wheel warm during cold days. They also come in a wide variety of colors and designs, making them a stylish option.

Durability and longevity is an issue with cloth covers, as sweat and moisture cause them to deteriorate quickly.

Wood Covers

This is the least common type of steering wheel cover but probably the most elegant. Often custom-made, wooden covers are an attractive automotive accessory that can make your steering wheel cover look extra luxurious.

The problem with these covers is that wood as a material is not very flexible and tends to fade with frequent exposure to the sun. It’s also not the best option for keeping your steering wheel warm in cold weather.

Rubber Covers

Rubber steering wheel covers are a very popular choice that provide a snug fit and improved grip. They are usually resistant to changes in the weather, not getting too hot or too cold during the summer and winter seasons.

These covers are not as durable as synthetic and genuine leather covers, however, and extreme heat can cause them to expand.

Features Of The Best Steering Wheel Cover

Despite appearing to have a very basic design, steering wheel covers have some key design features that you must consider before buying one, namely size, material, grip, and design.

Size

Sizing is the most important factor to consider before buying a steering wheel cover, as the wrong size will make the cover virtually useless. Too big, and it may slip off the steering wheel; too small, and it might be difficult to install or even tear prematurely.

Avoid sizing issues by finding the correct size of your steering wheel. To do this, use a tape measure to measure one end of the wheel to the other (its diameter), making sure to pass through the middle.

Most cars (sedans, crossovers, hatchbacks, wagons, etc.) have a medium size steering wheel, which typically ranges from 14.5 inches to 17.5 inches (37-46 cm), while pickup trucks and large SUVs have larger steering wheels measuring about 22 inches (56 cm).

Also consider the grip circumference, which indicates the thickness of the steering wheel rim. To find the measurement, simply wrap the tape measure around the thickest part of the rim.

The grip circumference of most medium-size steering wheels is typically between 2.75 and 4.25 inches (7-11 cm).

Material

Material is also another important consideration. Most steering wheel covers are made from synthetic leather since it’s a cheap material that effectively mimics most of the qualities of genuine leather. However, real leather tends to be more durable and easier to clean.

Rubber, cloth, wood, and synthetic mesh are other cheaper options. For a more detailed breakdown of each material, read the section discussing the different types of steering wheel covers, where we discuss the pros and cons of each material.

In addition to knowing what materials are used, you must know where they are used.

Outer Layer – The outer layer is the part that makes contact with your hand, so consider how you want it to feel in your hands (e.g. smooth vs textured, hard vs soft) and how well it handles dirt and sweat.

Inner Layer – With the inner layer, you want a material that sticks strongly to your steering wheel. Rubber is the most popular choice, as it creates strong friction that prevents the cover from gliding over the steering wheel.

Grip

Not only must your cover feel comfortable to hold, but it should also improve your grip when behind the wheel. Rubber and synthetic leather covers generally provide better grip than cloth covers, which tend to quickly soak up the sweat and natural oils from your hands and become uncomfortable to hold.

Textured covers provide even better grip than smooth covers. The embossed textures can take the form of tiny to large curves, irregular patterns, geometric shapes, or other interesting designs. The choice is up to use.

Design

A steering wheel cover can be a great way to spice up the look of your interior. They come in a wide range of colors and styles, so you’re sure to find one that compliments your car’s upholstery.

The largest variety of styles and colors can be found with cloth covers, while leather and faux leather covers are usually offered in darker, more natural tones. Rubber covers offer a wide selection, as well.

Speaking of colors, light-colored covers reflect sunlight, keeping your steering wheel cooler on hot, sunny days. Dark-colored covers, on the other hand, retain heat and are better suited for people living in cooler regions.

How To Put On A Steering Wheel Cover

Man installing the best steering wheel cover

Installing a steering wheel cover is a very easy and straightforward process, but only if you have the right size cover for your steering wheel. A cover that’s too big or too small usually complicates things.

If your steering wheel cover came with installation instructions, use it. Otherwise, here is a general step-by-step guide for installing any type of steering wheel cover.

Cleaning & Preparation

Never put on a steering wheel cover without first cleaning the steering wheel. Steering wheels are magnets for dirt, grime, bacteria, and even the formation of formation, all substances that can spread and cause serious damage if covered.

Step 1. If your steering wheel is particularly “germy,” start by wiping it down with a clean, microfiber towel and isopropyl alcohol.

Step 2. Follow up with a cleaner that’s suited for the material your steering wheel is made of. For plastic, rubber, and faux leather trim, a multi-purpose disinfectant diluted in water will get the job done. Real leather and wood require specialized cleaners that can usually be found at your local general store.

Note: When cleaning your steering wheel, make sure to apply the solution onto the towel and not directly on the steering wheel. Don’t risk getting the liquid inside the dashboard and causing damage to your car’s electronic components.

Step 3. After you’re done wiping the steering wheel with the cleaning solution, apply some water onto a clean cloth and give it a second wipe to remove loose dirt and any of the chemical cleaner that remains.

Step 4. Dry the steering wheel by giving it a final wipe with a dry cloth or paper towel or, alternatively, letting it air dry. Never, under any circumstance, put a cover on a damp or wet steering wheel.

Installation

Best Steering Wheel Cover Installation Illustration
Steering wheel cover installation 3-step illustration

Once your steering wheel is clean and dry, proceed to put on the cover.

Step 1. Remove any packaging that your steering wheel cover came with, including the cardboard element that’s usually placed at the center.

Step 2. Locate the inner side that contains the slit or opening, and then align the cover to the wheel.

Step 3. Place the cut side on the steering wheel, starting from the top section. Press and mold the cover onto the wheel.

Step 4. Holding the wrapped section tightly with your hands, slowly work your way down on each side of the steering wheel. The cover will get tighter as you approach the very bottom, so some force may be required to fully get it over the bottom section.

Step 5. After getting the cover onto the steering wheel, check the alignment to make sure everything is properly oriented and that all sides are even.

Note: Some steering wheel covers (usually leather) need to be bound or stitched after they’re on the wheel. They usually have built-in sewing holes and come packaged with sewing materials. In case yours doesn’t, a large leather needle with a right-size thread or a lacing string can be used as a substitute.

Steering Wheel Cover FAQs And Answer

Best Steering Wheel Covers FAQs

The answers to the following FAQs will help address any other questions that our steering wheel cover reviews and buying guide didn’t address.

What Is The Right Steering Wheel Cover Size For My Car?

To find the right size steering wheel cover, use a tape measure to measure the distance from one end of your steering wheel to the other (the diameter), making sure to pass through its center. Then, determine the grip circumference by running the tape measure around the thickest part of the wheel.

You may also be able to find your steering wheel measurements in your car owner’s manual. Most steering wheels have a diameter of between 14.5 inches and 17.5 inches (37-46 cm), with a grip circumference of 2.75 to 4.25 inches (7 to 11 cm).

Are Steering Wheel Covers Safe For Driving?

Steer wheel covers can make driving a safer, more enjoyable experience. A sug, well-fitting cover can improve the grip you have on the wheel, giving you better control of your vehicle.

Steering wheel covers are only dangerous when they’re too big for your steering wheel. Loose or saggy covers tend to be slippery, compromising the control you have over the vehicle.

Do Steering Wheel Covers Smell?

Steering wheel covers may have a noticeable smell depending on the material used to make them. Leather has a distinct, easily-recognizable smell that you may or may not like, while faux leather covers usually emit an odor that quickly dissipates after they’re removed from their original packaging.

Rubber covers have a very distinctive, often unpleasant, odor that can linger for some time, especially on your hands. Finally, while cloth covers generally don’t have an odor, they easily absorb surrounding smells, including those from your hands.

How Should I Clean My Steering Wheel Cover?

This depends on the type of material used to make your steering wheel cover. Rubber and faux leather steering wheels should be wiped with a clean towel and diluted all-purpose disinfectant, while wood and genuine leather covers require cleaning solutions designed specifically for those materials.

You can wash cloth covers by hand or in a washer on a gentle cycle. They can also be dry-cleaned.
